Wednesday's on the Water: $79 Group Sailing on Lake Lanier

A new way to sail with Captain John, built for guests who want the lake without the price tag of a private charter.

By Captain John Rice · April 17, 2026 · 4 min read

For two decades, almost every Lord Nelson charter has been private. You and your group, the boat, Captain John, and Lake Lanier. That's still our default. But after a lot of conversations with first-time sailors who couldn't quite justify the $350 minimum for a private cruise, we built something different.

Wednesday's on the Water is our new $79 group sail. It runs every Wednesday. Up to ten guests share the deck for two and a half hours. Bring your own wine, watch the sun drop, meet the people next to you. The first ten to sign up get the seats.

Why $79?

A 2.5-hour private sunset cruise starts at $350 for two guests. That's $175 per person. For couples celebrating something specific, that math works. For the rest of the time? Lake Lanier shouldn't only be reachable by people who've decided it's a special occasion.

$79 is what it costs Captain John to take ten guests out and still keep the lights on. There's no premium for "shared experience" because the experience itself is the same boat, the same captain, and the same lake.

What's Included

  • 2.5 hours on the water on Lord Nelson
  • Captain John at the helm with twenty years of Lake Lanier under his belt
  • Sunset-window timing (departure shifts a bit through the season to catch the light)
  • Up to nine other guests sharing the boat with you
  • BYOB - bring whatever drinks and snacks you want
  • A weather rebook policy that's simple and predictable

Who It's For

Solo travelers who want to be on a sailboat without renting one. Couples who want a Wednesday-night idea that isn't another restaurant. Out-of-towners visiting Atlanta who didn't know the lake existed. Parents who finally got a babysitter for a few hours. Two friends who want a proper catch-up away from notifications.

Not for: a corporate group that needs privacy, a proposal, a milestone birthday with eight family members. Those still want the private charter, where the deck is yours and the conversation isn't shared with strangers.

How Signup Works

You reserve a Wednesday seat through the booking form on our homepage. The form pre-selects "Wednesday's on the Water" and skips you to the date picker, which only shows Wednesdays - that way you can't accidentally book a Friday slot we don't run.

Pick how many seats you need (1 to 10). Pick your Wednesday. Submit your contact info. We don't charge until the sail is confirmed. Wednesday sails are confirmed Tuesday at 8:00 PM once at least 4 seats are reserved. If that minimum is not reached, we move reservations to the following Wednesday and send everyone updated confirmation details.

Weather

If a Wednesday gets weather we don't trust, your reservation rolls to the following Wednesday automatically. We don't process refunds for that. The reservation is yours, just shifted. If you can't make the new date, transfer the seat to a friend.

Private Charters Take Priority

Lord Nelson is one boat. If a private charter books a Wednesday before the group sail fills up, the private booking takes the date and the group sail moves to the next week. Same rebook rule as a weather day - your seat doesn't disappear, it just shifts.
