Most of our guests have never set foot on a sailboat. That is completely fine. In fact, it is one of my favorite parts of this job - watching someone discover that sailing is nothing like what they imagined. It is quieter, smoother, and more relaxing than almost anyone expects. Here is what your first time aboard Lord Nelson actually looks like.
Before You Arrive
We dock at Safe Harbor Aqualand Marina in Flowery Branch, about 40 minutes north of Atlanta. The address is 6800 Lights Ferry Rd. When you get to the marina, enter Safe Harbor and follow the road to Aqualand Drive, then head right to Dock Q. Give yourself an extra 10 minutes on your first visit. Parking is free and plentiful.
What to Bring
The short answer: whatever you want to eat and drink. Lord Nelson Charters is fully BYOB, which means you can bring a cooler with beer, wine, cocktails, soda, water - whatever you enjoy. Many guests pack a picnic basket with cheese, crackers, sandwiches, and fruit. A soft-sided cooler works best because it stows easier on the boat.
Beyond food and drinks, you will want sunscreen, sunglasses, and a light jacket for when the wind picks up. Wear shoes with soft soles or go barefoot.
What Happens When You Board
Captain John meets you at Dock Q and helps you aboard. He will show you where to stow your cooler and bags, point out the safety equipment, and give you a quick orientation of the boat. It takes about five minutes. Then we cast off, motor out of the marina channel, and once we hit open water, the sails go up.
That is the moment. The engine cuts off and suddenly it is just wind.
Will I Get Seasick?
Lake Lanier is an inland lake, not the open ocean. The water is calm, the waves are small, and the motion is gentle. In 20 years of chartering, seasickness has been extremely rare on our trips. If you are someone who gets carsick easily, take a Dramamine 30 minutes before boarding - that usually does the trick. But most people are surprised by how smooth it is.
Do I Have to Do Anything?
Not a thing. Captain John and crew handle all the sailing. You are welcome to sit back, relax, take photos, and enjoy the ride. That said, if you want to get hands-on, just say the word. We love teaching people to trim the sails, take the helm, or help with the lines. It is entirely your choice.
How Long Does It Last?
Our standard cruise is 2.5 hours, which is the sweet spot for most first-timers. Long enough to really settle in and enjoy it, short enough that you still have energy for dinner after. We also offer half-day charters (4 hours) and full-day adventures (7 hours) if you want more time on the water.
What If the Weather Looks Iffy?
Captain John monitors the forecast starting three days out. If conditions are genuinely unsafe - thunderstorms, high winds, lightning - he will call you to reschedule at no extra charge. Light rain and overcast skies are usually fine for sailing and can actually make for a beautiful, moody experience on the lake. Trust the captain's judgment.
